Caitlin Whaley has been interested in becoming a doctor since she volunteered to rock NICU babies when she was 16. Her interest has only grown this summer as the incoming senior at the University of Akron was one of 13 students who participated in the hospital’s Summer Pediatric Research Scholars program. Nurses Learn to Bring Genomics to the Bedside |
Akron Children’s Hospital is participating in a national project to evaluate and improve nurses’ attitudes, knowledge and competency about genomics. The project, entitled “Expanding RN Scope of Practice: A Method for Introducing a New Competency into Nursing Practice,” includes 25 Magnet hospitals and seeks to bring genomics and genetics to the bedside through nurses. Research by two residents and one fellow at Akron Children’s was recognized for excellence and presented at a recent Grand Rounds. The topics were “Evaluation of Limited Screw-Density Pedicle Screw Constructs in Posterior Fusions for Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis;” “Association of Goutallier Classification Findings and Delayed Recovery with Physical Therapy in Adolescents with Spondylolysis;” and “High Blood Glucose in the First 12 Hours of Life Predicts Poor Outcome in Asphyxiated Term Newborns.” View the Presentations |
