Dr. Christopher honored for outstanding contributions to pediatrics
Dr. Norm Christopher has received the 2017 Elizabeth Spencer Ruppert, MD, FAAP, Outstanding Pediatrician of the Year Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Ohio Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. The award recognizes a pediatrician for distinguished achievements and outstanding contributions to the advancement of pediatric care and education in Ohio and across the country. Read more
From the Medical Staff President
In this month’s letter to the medical staff, Dr. Laura Pollauf summarizes the findings of our successful Joint Commission visit, including 200 standards that are the responsibility of the Medical Staff Office. She highlights the recent activities of the MSEC and the Department of Pediatrics Chairman Reception, where Dr. Starla Martinez received the Legendary Service Award. She also reminds our medical staff that Annual Mandatory Training must be completed online by Nov. 30, and the Ohio Pediatric Trauma Symposium will be held on Dec. 8. Read more

Dr. Mancuso new MFM chair 

Dr. Melissa Mancuso has been named permanent chair of maternal fetal medicine. She will also continue to serve as the medical director of our Fetal Treatment Center. Read more
New VP-general counsel named

Anthea Daniels has joined Akron Children’s as vice president and general counsel. Previously, she was an equity shareholder and member of the health law department at Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz, PC. Read more
Hospital receives community partner award
Through a partnership with Community Legal Aid, our Locust Pediatric Care Group helps qualifying patient families access free legal services. In recognition of these efforts, Community Legal Aid presented Akron Children’s with their Community Partner Award. Read more
Leadership changes for Mahoning Valley neonatology
Until Jan. 8, Dr. Mohammed Tamim will serve as the physician point person for Mahoning Valley neonatology. During this time, Dr. Jennifer Manning will provide back-up coverage for Dr. Tamim. In January, Dr. Barbara Clouser will rejoin the Mahoning Valley neonatology team as regional director. If assistance is needed during regular business hours, call Dr. Tamim or Kym Baker at 330-729-7633. After hours, contact the neonatologist on-call at 330-729-4250.
Safe Mobility website is launched 

A new website launched by Akron Children’s and the Goodyear Foundation as part of the Safe Mobility Project gives parents tools and resources to keep their children safe in cars, on bikes and behind the wheel. Read more
Children’s Up Close shadowing day held

Business leaders from the Mahoning Valley shadowed several of our doctors on the Beeghly campus to get an eye-opening look at the work we do. Read more
Department and Service Updates
New model of care for surgery

As medical director of the recently created Perioperative Surgical Home, Dr. Andrew Meyer is leading our efforts to better coordinate care for more complex surgical cases, improve outcomes across the perioperative continuum and reduce healthcare costs. Read more
Headache Infusion Center expands
The Infusion Center in the NeuroDevelopmental Science Center provides a comfortable setting for patients to receive medication for refractory migraines and post-traumatic headaches. It was recently expanded to treat other neurological conditions. Read more
New guidelines for early introduction of peanut

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases has released formal guidelines regarding the early introduction of peanut. Dr. Rajeev Kishore and his team in allergy/immunology have summarized these guidelines for primary care physicians, while incorporating the protocol for follow-up testing into their practice. Review the latest policy updates 
The latest medical staff policies to be revised and approved are: 
  • FPPE/Focused Professional Practice Evaluation
  • OPPE/Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluation
  • Verbal Orders
  • Procedural Sedation
In addition, the Impaired Provider Policy was completely rewritten and approved on Oct. 26. This policy contains processes for providing education regarding practitioner/APP health and facilitating the confidential diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of those who suffer from a potentially impairing condition. This policy is intended to ensure members of our medical staff safely exercise the privileges granted, and provides for a collegial, voluntary and responsive resolution when a concern is raised.

New inpatient protocol aims to Fight Flu

Dr. Samantha Gunkelman is leading efforts to ensure more eligible inpatients receive the flu vaccine before they are discharged. Read more

Congratulations to Dr. Laura Markley, who was recently recognized by the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine for her subcommittee work in pediatrics. Read more
Akron Children’s email addresses are changing

On Dec. 4, all Akron Children’s email extensions will change from @chmca.org to @akronchildrens.org. There will be a grace period during which email will be redirected, but we encourage you to inform your external contacts to avoid interruptions in communication. For help in communicating this change, go to myKidsnet. Send questions or concerns to emailchange@akronchildrens.org.
New Name for ACHP Warren West
Our Warren West pediatrics office is changing its name to Akron Children’s Hospital Pediatrics, Warren Downtown. The new name helps us avoid being confused with another Warren West healthcare provider – and conveys how close our facility is to the historic downtown district.
New deadline for sponsorships, outreach events
The Sponsorship Committee has changed the lead time for requesting our sponsorship or participation in outreach events from 8 to 6 weeks. Requests may be made by submitting this completed form.
