Dr. Michael Kelly named chief research officer
Michael Kelly, MD, PhD, has joined Akron Children’s as chief research officer. He will oversee the Rebecca D. Considine Research Institute and research activities conducted enterprise wide. Originally from Zanesville, Dr. Kelly comes to Akron Children’s with more than 30 years of experience in pediatric research and oncology. Read more

Goodyear Safe Mobility Project reaches milestone

In March 2016, the Goodyear Foundation teamed up with Akron Children’s for the Goodyear Safe Mobility Project, a 3-year grant to expand our child safety programs. On May 2, the project gave away its 500th bike helmet. Read more

New urgent care hours
To better accommodate families after hours and to help them avoid a trip to the ED for minor illness and injury, our urgent care centers in Hudson, Mansfield, Warren and Montrose now have new hours. Read more
Jill Smith recognized for professional service

Jill Smith, a nurse practitioner in outpatient pre-surgery, was named the 2017 Pediatric Nurse Practitioner of the Year by the Ohio Chapter of the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners. The award recognizes her service to the organization. Read more
Child’s allergies pose life-threatening risk

An area family is grateful for Dr. Rajeev Kishore and the team in the Center for Allergy and Immunology, who have helped them manage their daughter’s severe food allergies. Read more 
Family thanks plastic surgery team

The parents of a young boy are relieved Dr. Niyant Patel was able to successfully remove a giant congenital melanocytic nevus in the middle of their son’s back with just 1 surgery. Read more
Policies, Procedures and Announcements
Latest policy updates
A revised Professional Conduct Policy, which has been renamed Practitioner/Advanced Practice Provider Professional Conduct, has been approved. You are encouraged to review this important policy. A revised policy covering the Prescription of Opioids, Benzodiazepines and Other Controlled Substances in the Outpatient Setting was also approved. This is a new title that combines 2 previous Medical Staff policies: Prescription of Controlled Substances in the Outpatient Setting and Prescribing Opioids and Other Controlled Substances. Response to venous lead test concerns

On May 17, the FDA and CDC gave notice that venous lead tests from Magellan Diagnostics’ LeadCare® analyzers are possibly falsely negative. We do not use this system for venous lead testing, so if your venous samples are sent to our labs, the lead tests remain valid. If you use other labs for venous lead testing, please contact them regarding this notice. Read more
Annual meeting on June 14 
The Medical Staff Annual Meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 14. The business portion of the meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m., with a social hour immediately following. Read more
Confidential survey on wellness, stress
You’re invited to participate in an IRB-approved (exempt status) anonymous survey regarding wellness, stress and burnout among our Medical Staff. Read more

First Akron Marathon event on June 24

The first races in the Akron Marathon series will be held on June 24 at 8:30 a.m., as the National Interstate 8K and 1 Mile get underway at InfoCision Stadium. Read more

Neil McNinch MS, RN, biostatistician for the Rebecca D. Considine Research Institute, will offer a compelling introduction to biostatistics and basic statistical theory in medical research. Research experience is not required, but if you’re conducting research or interested in getting started, you’ll want to attend. Registration not required.
