New director of inclusion and diversity shares her vision
Carole Becerra joined Akron Children’s in late March in the newly created role of director of inclusion and diversity. In this role, she is working to make diversity and inclusion a part of our staff’s everyday life, so it touch all areas of the hospital. Prior to joining Akron Children’s, she served as the manager of inclusion and diversity for MetroHealth Medical Center. Read more

Dr. Nancy O’Dell continues a legacy of giving

Pediatric anesthesiologist and hospital donor, Nancy O’Dell continues the legacy of her father, Dr. Harry O’Dell, who was an orthopedic surgeon at Akron Children’s for more than 40 years and a former chief of staff. Read more
HR launches new campaign
“More than a Job” is the theme of a recently launched HR campaign that encourages employees to share with potential job seekers why they love working at Akron Children’s, using the hashtag #ACHMoreThanAJob. Read more
A welcoming environment on our Beeghly campus

A local artist has created “The Dreaming Tree” to welcome patients, families and visitors as they enter the lobby of the Beeghly campus expansion. The project was recently featured in a news segment on WFMJ.

Kidney Stone Clinic opens

Our new Kidney Stone Clinic has opened to serve an increasing number of children and teens experiencing stones in the kidney, ureter and bladder. Read more
Specialty services move to North Canton
Our specialty services previously located at Aultman Hospital have relocated to 6100 Whipple Ave. NW in North Canton. This includes allergy/immunology, diabetes/endocrinology, neurology/physiatry, gastroenterology and pulmonology. We’ve also added urology services at this location. Read more
Sleep Center receives accreditation

Akron Children’s Sleep Center has received 5-year accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Read more
Preston shares the story of his surgery day 
In a new video, plastic surgery patient Preston Coblentz shares a homemade book he made about his recent surgery with Dr. Ananth Murthy. The step-by-step book, which Preston reads in the video, can help prepare other children who are having surgery. 
Café planned for Considine Building 

When the expanded Considine Building opens next year, it will feature a café with fresh, made-to-order items. The café will also make it possible to provide snacks and hot lunches to patients in the partial hospitalization program, which will relocate from the AES Building once construction is complete. The following new medical staff policies were approved this month:
  • Allied Health Professional Privileging Policy 
  • Neurotrauma Contingency Plan 
In addition, the policy on Licensing Verification for Ordering Providers Not Appointed to the Medical Staff was updated and approved.

Kudos to Dr. Joe Congeni

Joe Congeni was a guest speaker of the Warthog Society, an alumni group of the Cleveland Clinic’s sports health program. Considered a Godfather of the group, Dr. Congeni presented on pediatric concussions, and was a featured speaker at the closing banquet with a presentation entitled, “Everything I Ever Really Needed to Know I Learned in Youth Sports.” 
Sheila Alspaugh retires

Best wishes to credentialing specialist Sheila Alspaugh, who retires on June 30 after 26 years of service. Read more
