Visitor restrictions now in effect for flu, RSV season
With seasonal respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and influenza on the rise, new visitor restrictions went into effect on Jan. 24. This includes restrictions on visitors under age 12, including siblings, on certain units. Read more

Advanced Practice Providers
The Advanced Practice Provider Center has launched a new onboarding process for new and transitioning providers. It includes a 2-day in-classroom + 1-simulation-day boot camp to immerse providers in Akron Children’s culture. The first 2-day, in-classroom boot camp session will be held March 7-8. Read more

Online campaign spotlights our pediatric surgeons

Akron Children’s has embarked on an online campaign to increase awareness and preference for general pediatric surgery among Millennial and Gen X parents in our service area, and generate new patients. As part of the campaign, videos were created that feature each of our surgeons. Watch here
Cardiology opens in new locations
Pediatric cardiologists J.R. Bockoven and Stephen Manu are now seeing patients at our specialty care locations in Twinsburg and Medina. Read more
Urology now seeing patients in Norwalk
Pediatric urologist Daniel McMahon is now seeing patients at Fisher-Titus Medical Center in Norwalk. Read more
Female neurosurgeons part of elite club

Pediatric neurosurgery is a relatively small specialty with a few hundred practitioners nationwide. Akron Children’s is unique to have 2 female pediatric neurosurgeons, Tsulee Chen and Gwyneth Hughes. Read more
Program for tics propels patient to national stage

Pediatric psychologist Katrina Lindsay has developed a new 8-week program for children with tic and Tourette disorders. The first program “graduate,” Ethan Herald, has been chosen to represent Ohio as a youth ambassador for the Tourette Association of America. Read more
Behavioral Health ED pilots crisis text line
Our behavioral health ED is piloting a new crisis text line for all ages, but is targeted to kids ages 13-17. By texting “4hope” to 741741 those in crisis will be contacted within 5 minutes via text by a crisis counselor who can provide them with the appropriate local resource. Read more

Call 3SAFE to report safety concerns
If you notice unsafe conditions in or outside the hospital, such as icy sidewalks or slippery stairs, report your concerns by calling 3SAFE. Read more
Dr. Andrish chosen as Chief Moment Officer

Kudos to Dr. Shannon Andrish from our Hudson Urgent Care office, who was named the Chief Moment Officer for December by our Center for Patient Experience Innovation. This monthly award is given to staff members who are recognized by patient families as making a positive impact on their experience at Akron Children’s. Read more
Latest grief support series for children
The next 6-week Good Mourning grief support group for bereaved children and their caregivers will be held on Tuesday evenings, Feb. 14-March 21, in the Considine Professional Building. Families can register through palliative care at 330-543-3343. Read more 
Dance Unlimited is recruiting dancers

Dance Unlimited - a free dance program for kids of all abilities, ages 4 and up - is accepting new dancers for its spring session, which runs from Feb. 14-May 6. To sign up, parents should call Kellie Lightfoot at 330-543-7960. Read more
