Dr. Haynes Robinson retires after 54 years
Dr. Haynes Robinson, director of the Genetic Center, has retired after a distinguished career at Akron Children’s that began in 1963. Under his leadership, our Genetic Center was founded in 1977 and became a major force in Ohio. He was also instrumental in forming the regional Fetal Care Center in 2002. Read more

While Dr. Cooper White is on vacation, Dr. Laura Pollauf summarizes the April activities of the Medical Staff Executive Committee and announces three candidates for the office of vice president: Dr. Michael Forbes, Dr. Troy Sands and Dr. Tsulee Chen. She also highlights a recent luncheon with more than 30 senior pediatric leaders from the region, Akron Children’s participation in an annual disaster drill and the need for your comments in the 2017 Patient Safety Culture Survey.     Children’s launches new TV ad campaign

    Watch our latest TV ad campaign, which highlights our ACHP offices, radiation-free ablations, and a visit to Akron Children’s through the eyes of one of our patients:
    New director of cytogenetics
    Dr. Jie Xu has joined Akron Children’s as the medical director of the cytogenetics lab. An accomplished researcher and educator, he previously served as senior cytogenetics director in the Quest Diagnostics Nichols Institute in Chantilly, VA, one of the largest cytogenetics labs in the world.     Fitch upgrades hospital’s rating to AA-
    Fitch Ratings has upgraded its rating on $195 million in bonds issued on our behalf from A+ to AA-, reflecting that we have enough capacity at the higher rating to absorb the financial impact of the $84 million Considine Building expansion project. Read more
    Transition team charts course for Beeghly expansion

    A group of 25 service line managers, led by Lisa Taafe, is coordinating every detail of the Beeghly campus expansion to ensure a smooth opening of the new building in July. Read more

    NICU director recognized for leadership

    Congratulations to Christine Young, director of nursing neonatal services, for being named Akron Children's recipient of the 2017 March of Dimes’ Excellence in NICU Leadership award. Christine was nominated by not just one, but 5 of her nurse managers. Read more
    Psoriasis therapy gives teen her life back

    Dr. Nicholas Nguyen, director of Pediatric Dermatology, has given an Akron teen a new lease on life after successfully treating a severe form of psoriasis, which covered her in painful, blister-like patches and prevented her from going to school and enjoying other daily activities. Read more 
    Services for infant hearing loss

    Hearing loss is the No. 1 birth defect in America, so early identification and intervention are essential. Akron Children’s offers the full spectrum of infant hearing loss services, including cochlear implants for severe to profound hearing loss. Read more
    Policies, Procedures and Announcements
    Onboarding policy revisions
    Some changes have been made to the Advanced Practice Provider and Practitioner Onboarding Policy (previously titled Medical Staff Provider Onboarding), so that terminology is consistent with the Bylaws. Direct questions to Danielle Buzek in Medical Staff Services at 330-543-5818 or Dr. Mike Bigham at 330-543-4369. Look for the new policy to be posted soon on the Medical Staff policy page.
    Dr. Foster named Chief Moment Officer

    Kudos to Dr. Jessica Foster, who was named the Chief Moment Officer for March by our Center for Patient Experience Innovation. This monthly award is given to staff members who are recognized by patient families as making a positive impact on their experiences at Akron Children’s. Read more
