Childhood memories inspire new building

The concrete is being poured, and the newest building on the Akron campus is taking shape. While work continues on the structure itself, a visioning process between architects and hospital leadership has resulted in the theme for the interior of the building, inspired by childhood memories of time spent outdoors. The theme meets hospital leadership’s desire to create a place that’s distinctive and sparks creativity and hope. Each department in the new building will feature a backyard-related design. Hospital receives NorthCoast 99 award

Earlier this month, Akron Children’s Hospital was recognized as one of the best places to work in northeast Ohio for the seventh year, when the hospital received the NorthCoast 99 award. The program was developed by the Employers Resource Council (ERC), which is northeast Ohio’s leading professional organization dedicated to human resources. Read more

Mahoning Valley radiothon raises $193,971

Thanks to our supporters, Change Bandits, volunteers, Mix 98.9 and 570 WKBN who made the fifth annual Miracles & Promises radiothon a success. The 36-hour radio broadcast, which featured patient stories, and interviews with hospital leadership, doctors and staff, raised $193,971 for programs and services at Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley. Ahoy matey

Hospital hallways recently came alive with pirate lingo in celebration of “Talk like a Pirate Day” on Sept. 19. Four years ago, Dr. Tom Enlow (a.k.a. Cap’n Maddog) started marking the occasion by dressing up, and each year, more staff have joined in the fun. This year, the NeuroDevelopmental Science Center staff handed out pirate-themed books and goody bags, and shared pirate jokes with patients. Read more

Hope Lights the Way
When Teresa Hedrick, employee health manager at Akron Children’s Hospital, was 50 years old, she was sent to the doctor for an ultrasound and mammogram. Within two weeks, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. As a cancer survivor, Hedrick will be the keynote speaker at Hope Lights the Way on Oct. 1 in Perkins Square Park. Read more
