Spider-Man and friends visit the hospital

Spider-Man and his friends took a break from saving lives to help with a little spring cleaning and to brighten our patients’ day. On March 22, six superheroes rappelled down the hospital as they washed windows, while spectators in the atrium lobby watched. After their work was done, Batman, Robin, Spider-Man, Wolverine, Iron Man and the Incredible Hulk visited patients in the cancer and pediatric intensive care units. Read more

Clearing the way for growth

Demolition of buildings near the Akron campus began in March to make room for the new critical care tower, which will include an emergency department, neonatal intensive care unit and ambulatory surgery center. The former Wally Waffle building at Locust and West Exchange streets was the first to come down. Watch now

Maya: the big dog, with an even bigger heart


There’s a new face in the Doggie Brigade: Maya, a 130 pound, Newfoundland owned by Shawn Lyden, executive vice president of Akron Children’s Hospital. Despite Maya’s large size, she has already created a special place in our patients’ hearts. Read more

Artist opens up a world of imagination

Since opening in 2008, the staff at the Beeghly campus in Boardman has been trying to create a more child-friendly atmosphere for their young patients. Susan Farkas, an art teacher for the Boardman Local Schools, recently spent more than 200 hours painting “The Journey,” a mural located in the hallway that connects buildings B and D. Read more

Several Akron Children’s Hospital Pediatrics offices celebrated Read Across America Day on March 1 in honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday. Children received a new book, and many enjoyed story time with librarians. Read more
