Akron Children's Mahoning Valley has upgraded its radiology department at the Beeghly campus. Primarily funded by a $1 million donation from the Kikel Charitable Trust, the enhancements and upgrades include new transcranial Doppler equipment that uses ultrasound waves to detect at-risk stroke in sickle cell patients. | New device could reduce scoliosis surgeries |
Todd Ritzman, MD, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon at Akron Children’s, and Stephen Fening, PhD, director of orthopedic devices for ABIA, have obtained patents to test a magnet device that could reduce surgeries for children with scoliosis. As a result, the Austen BioInnovation Insitute (ABIA) in Akron recently announced the formation of APTO Orthopaedics, a medical device company that will work to commercialize the device. Learn more
