$72.5 million reported in community benefit

Akron Children’s measures the investments we make in the well-being of children and teens in northeast Ohio through our community benefit program. In 2010, the hospital’s community benefits totaled more than $72.5 million, which included programs and services targeted toward childhood obesity and mental health issues. A recent community health assessment revealed these are top concerns of residents in Akron Children's service area. Look at the Community Benefit Report.

Chaplain provides support off the ground

Mitchell Holley, a chaplain at Akron Children's, helps keep families, patients, and the crew calm in Air Bear®, Ohio’s first and only pediatric-dedicated transport helicopter. The transport program is one of only three nationwide to include a flight chaplain. Learn about Holley's work at the hospital and his Air Bear® shift.

10 years of gratitude
Sidney McLain, one of the Heart Center's first patients, recently celebrated her 10th birthday. Sidney was born with a serious heart defect, requiring surgery soon after birth. Ten years later, her mother, Lisa, still remembers the doctors and nurses who took care of her daughter. Read Sidney's story.
Lean Six Sigma benefits health care research

Akron Children's uses Lean Six Sigma principles to improve processes that result in better patient care and organizational quality. Dr. David Chand, MD, MSE, MBOE, FAAP, spoke at the hospital’s Translational Science Seminar where he discussed applying principles of Lean Six Sigma to clinical research. Learn more.

Pinwheels displayed for prevention
In recognition of Child Abuse Prevention Month this April, Akron Children’s Child Advocacy Center and Mahoning County Children Services hosted the 7th annual Pinwheels for Prevention. This year, 1,302 pinwheels were placed on the Beeghly campus to represent the children who received abuse services in the Mahoning County in 2011.
